Abstract In a CDMA cellular system, a method for estimating the amplitude of a traffic channel based on a pilot signal received from two or more basestations. Each channel in a RAKE receiver is provided with a data signal received on a traffic channel and a pilot signal received on a pilot channel. A comparison is made between the product of the pilot signal and the data signal versus the product of the pilot signal and an estimate of the traffic channel amplitude. The estimate of the traffic channel amplitude drives a feedback loop to refine the comparison and the data signal is weighted by the traffic channel amplitude estimate and combined with weighted data signals in the other channels of the RAKE receiver.
