Abstract A method and an apparatus for allowing a viewer to set arbitrary edit points that define a program segment for omission during a program presentation. The present invention is particularly suitable for use with program data comprising video data and associated control data formatted in accordance with the DVD specification. The present invention allows the user to define arbitrary program segment boundaries by creating microcells which are stored in a secondary table. The parameters in the microcell are used to provide seamless presentation of a program which includes cells and microcell. The microcells are an overlay to the presentation data on the disc, and thus, does not affect the underlying presentation data.
