Abstract Mixtures of optical brighteners contain (a) bisbenzoxazolyl(s) of formula (I) and/or 7-naphtho1,2-dutriazol-2-yl-3-phenyl-coumarin of formula (II) and (b) beta -(benzoxazol-2-yl)-styrene(s) and/or 4-(benzoxazol-2-yl)-stilbene(s) of formula (III) as brighteners; in which R<1>, R<2> = hydrogen (H), 1-10 carbon (C) alkyl or carbo-(1-4 C)-alkoxy; X = 1,4-naphthylene, 2,5-thiophene or 2,5-furan; R<3> = H, halogen, 1-4 C alkyl or phenyl in the 5-position and R<4> = H; or R<3>, R<4> = methyl (Me) in the 5- and 6- or 5- and 7-position; n = 0 or 1; B = cyano, carbo-(1-4 C)-alkoxy or a group of the formulae; R<5> = 1-6 C alkyl, 1-8 C cycloalkyl, 1-4 C alkoxy-(1-4 C)-alkyl, hydroxy-(1-4 C)-alkyl or -(CH2CH2O)n-R'; n = 2 or 3; R' = H or 1-4 C alkyl; R<6> = phenyl, halophenyl, 1-4 C alkylphenyl or 1-4 C alkoxyphenyl; R<7> = 1-4 C alkyl; R<8> – cyano or carbo-(1-4 C)-alkoxy.
