Abstract The present invention provides a gain control optical amplifier, used in a wave division multiplexing transmission system as a relay amplifier, for maintaining the output level of the optical signal to be fixed and be unrelated to the input level. The gain control optical amplifier according to the present invention, includes a first and second fiber amplifiers 20 and 60, respectively for amplifying the input power of the optical signals. The first and second fiber amplifiers 20 and 60, are respectively for amplifying the gain setting to a value corresponding to the the greatest gain loss of the optical signal transmitted through the optical lines. In addition, the gain control optical amplifier includes: an attenuator 40, for attenuating the power of the optical signal transmitted through the optical lines; and attenuation gain control devices 10,30 and 50, for adjusting the attenuation gain of the attenuator 40 based on the power of the optical signal. The attenuation gain control device detectes the transmission distance of the optical signal and sets up the attenuation gain based on the detected results. Therefore, due to the output signal power can be set as a fixed value based on the transmission distance of the optical signal inputed to the optical amplifier, it is possible to selectively set up an optical amplifier on the basis of the transmission distance.
