Abstract The method involves providing an identifier for identifying a first clock source (T3(Q1)) by a clock master of a first network element (NE A). The first network element is connected to the first clock source. A timing marker is sent from the first network element to other network elements (NE B,..,NE X), which are connected to the first network element. The identifier is stored in at least one of the elements in the rings formed from the network elements. When the first clock source fails, circulation of the timing marker in the connected network elements is prevented by comparing the received identifier with the stored identifier. When the identifiers are in conformance, the first clock sequence and the corresponding transmission signal are not used for synchronisation of the network elements. The synchronisation of the network elements is carried out by a further clock source (T3(Q2) and by a timing marker allocated to the clock source. An identifier is allocated to the further clock source by a clock master of a network element, which is connected to the further clock source.
