Abstract The invention provides a slider and its machining method that solve a problem of damaging a recording medium such as a magnetic disk, a problem caused by a sharp ridge shape, harmful projection or chipping of the edge, and that realize a magnetic head free from damage in a magnetic disk or read/write errors. The surface of a bar is cut in the width direction over the entire thickness and separated individually for each slider. A wire saw having a diameter larger than the cut width (width of the cut groove) is brought into contact with the cut groove part, and pressurized in the thickness direction of the bar while being slid in the longitudinal direction, with chamfering performed on the edge of each slider. Consequently, while the edge of each slider is chamfered in the shape of a recessed curved cross section, an extremely smooth polished surface can be obtained.
